| Mad Max, 2015
Starring: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult.
Directed by: George Miller.
Mad max details yet another step in Max Rockatansky's endless journey searching for a righteous cause through the wastes of the Australian desert. The film quickly establishes a fast pace and maintains this throughout with no let up whatsoever. The plot also moves quickly and never stops for exposition which is cleverly aided by the fact the plot relies only on events you see and never references the bigger picture (A clever feature i've noticed in the max films) or past events. Fury road is unique in the sense this is the first film where we see Max actually get captured by the Warboys (Pretty sure..been a while since i saw max films tho) and also the first time we saw max actually get haunted by visions of his deceased daughter. (Would have been nice to see his wife too, though i admire Miller's restraint from creating a scene commonly found in action movies where the protagonist nearly dies and imagines their loved ones..etc (seen it before so many times)) Anyway, this plot device isn't in the film..thankfully and instead max has sudden interruptions when his daughter breaks through to haunt him. This is much more tasteful and interesting.
Another strong point of fury road is its depiction of the warboys less as mindless individuals who randomly attack people and are out of their minds and more as rational people who have been turned insane by their quest for fuel and water and have found themselves believing in a cult-style future if they serve their leader well. This is much more effective and meaningful and is supplemented by the grounded personalities of the women. In addition, the several deaths which occur over the course of the film ground the film in reality: a trait which is lacked by many action films of today.
Overall, i could go on forever about the films strengths. In terms of weaknesses, they are very few. i would criticise max's lack of dialogue through the film despite his lines being powerful and well written when spoken and his lack of human moments with the female characters which could have been better exploited. Other than that, the films numerous car chases also reiterate old ground such as the inclusion of a tanker...etc. and i would like to see new car chases which are more inventive and relate less to old ground so to speak for future max films. I'd also like to forward my dislike of the two blood transfusion sequences in the film which were very creepy and sadistic and unnecessary and didn't really work. I just wasn't cool with that, but i liked everything else.
Overall, Personal opinion: 10/10 in the action movie category
8-9/10 overall.
A must watch film which breaks the mold accrued by past boring action films which throwsback to the golden age of action back in the 70s-mid 90s. | |
